About Our Brand
Today, some Chattel Houses remain on Barbados, and they provide a vital link between the current struggles and the history of Chattel Slavery.
We chose the Barbados Chattel House as a name and a symbol as a tribute to the memory and resilience of the Chattel Slaves. The Chattel House Company is proud to represent our ancestors' memories by naming our company in honor of the freed slaves of Barbados. Some slaves had an opportunity to build and own homes; however, they could not own the land. Many times the slaves had to relocate between slaveowners. Consequently, these Chattel Houses were built to be disassembled, packaged atop a donkey cart and relocated to the new plantation. Additionally, the houses were constructed on a very loose foundation of limestones since there could be no semblance of permanency.
Chattel House has committed to providing a portion of all sales to promote Technology education in Barbados.
We invite you to explore our gallery and we look forward to sharing our experiences with you.
